Give the gift of reading to children in need

Welcome to BookWorks, an exciting new program by Goodwill Industries of Central Florida that aims to spark a love of reading among children ages 3 to 5.

BookWorks aligns with our mission of “Building Lives that Work” by instilling a love of reading that prepares children to succeed in tomorrow’s workforce. Because early childhood literacy is linked to later employability, BookWorks enhances our goal of helping people achieve their full potential through the dignity and power of work.

Why is BookWorks such a crucial initiative?

National statistics show that children in low-income families tend to have two or fewer age-appropriate books at home. This program promotes literacy by putting high-quality books in the hands of children who need them most. It's also a great way for parents to help their children learn to read, practice words and expand their minds.

How does the process work?

Age-appropriate donated books are cleaned, inspected and fitted with a bookplate at our main facility in Orlando. From there, Goodwill volunteers read to groups of preschoolers, kindergarteners and first-graders at local child care centers and public schools. After each reading, students receive a book to help them grow their home libraries. The volunteer writes the child's name on the bookplate, making it a cherished keepsake that holds unique personal value.

How you can help.

We need the community's support to bring the joy of reading to more children in local classrooms. Here are four ways you can help the BookWorks program:

  • Donate: New or gently loved children's books can be dropped off at any Goodwill store or Donation Xpress Center.  Our yearly donation drive is from Feb. 1 to March 15. If donating at the store, just drop your donations into the specially marked bin in the front of the store, and if donating at a DX, place the books in a bag marked "BookWorks" on the bag.
  • Read: Classroom readers must be at least 18 years old, willing to read twice a month at a designated location (we will work with you on finding the perfect fit) and able to pick up books from a Goodwill site. All readers must attend a one-time orientation. For more information and an application, visit our volunteer section.
  • Sort and clean books: Books must be sorted, cleaned and organized before a reader can take them to a classroom. We welcome groups or individuals to help us with this important process at our main facility in Orlando.
  • Team up: We encourage corporate, civic and other groups to participate by scheduling times to read or clean. Spend a few hours giving back to our community - and have fun while serving!
