Dropping off a bag of clothes or shopping for a household item at Goodwill may feel like a simple act. Yet every donation and purchase creates opportunities for people throughout Central Florida, including Goodwill Team Members like Rodney Rodriguez.
As the Donation Lead at Goodwill Industries of Central Florida’s Avalon Park Donation Xpress, Rodney welcomes donors each day and helps ensure their contributions can do the greatest good. He believes every donation represents a piece of someone’s story and takes pride in knowing those items can stay out of landfills and find new purpose in someone else’s life.
For Rodney, that mission is personal. At 56, he is pursuing an Associate Degree in Hospitality Management at Valencia College through the Goodwill Scholars program, which covers tuition, books, and required fees upfront. The support has allowed him to focus on his education without an overwhelming financial burden.
Balancing school and work is no small task. In addition to working full-time, Rodney is also the primary caregiver for his mother. Despite the demands on his time, he remains committed to investing in his future.
Through the Prosperity Platform, Goodwill’s free financial coaching program, Rodney connected with a Prosperity Planner who helped him review his finances, pay down debt, and create a plan for achieving his long-term goals. “My coach helped me understand that setbacks don’t define your future,” Rodney shared. “She helped me create a roadmap for success and supported me every step of the way.” That support has helped Rodney grow both personally and professionally.
Since joining Goodwill two and a half years ago as a part-time cashier, he has advanced into a full-time role as a Donation Lead while continuing to build skills that support his career and educational goals. Today, Rodney is working toward earning his degree, strengthening his financial future, and proving that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams. He is grateful for the opportunity to invest in himself while receiving the support needed to balance work, caregiving, and school.
His story is a testament to Goodwill’s mission in action.
